Guest House

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

Some much wisdom and so much truth.I am in awe of your timing. I feel better now about all my unexpected visitors and I will try and learn to understand the message being sent to me. Thank you

that is profound.

I think so much of our difficulty with life is our resistance to it. To just let it in, whatever comes? Maybe that's how we can get peace.

I can't thank you enough for this. It comes at a time of real need to read these words...for someone very close to me. Thank you.

I've never read that one... I think it just might be my favorite of Rumi's... well, among the top... you know how it is with Rumi - there's the moment one's in and the writing that fits. This fits now - THANKS!

That is beautiful! Thank you. I didn't mean to describe all that come, only the ones that I don't especially like. I will write of the others sometime.
