Don't Chant and Drive?

Krishna Das at Kripalu, March 21

Well I told you that chanting is powerful stuff, but even I was surprised to find that the CD included with Krishna Das's book Chants of a Lifetime (which I was almost too shy to ask him to sign for me) comes with the following warning:
Please note: Hay House cds are powerful, energizing, and life-changing tools for growth...but they are not in intended to be a substitute for medical care. If you are dealing with any sort of mental or emotional disorder, are undergoing psychotherapy, are experiencing seizures, or have any other neurological or neurorespiratory disease, we suggest that you consult your physician or therapist and use this CD under their supervision. Neither the author nor Hay House, Inc assumes responsibility for your improper use of this CD.

Caution: This CD features chants that render it inappropriate for use while driving or operating heavy machinery.
Well, I'm not giving up my commute chanting anytime soon, but I'll make sure I have my seat belt buckled tight, just in case this cd pushes me over the edge. As J warned this morning, "Don't Ram into a tree!"

I've never read the first warning but the second is de rigeur (sp?) for chanting, drumming tapes. Also meditation tapes. I can hear KD's voice in my head.

l had Eckhart Tolle's CDs in my car for a long time. Lucky - it kept bringing me back to the present. But it's hard to concentrate on a voice and be driving at the same time... Keep up the chanting though ;-)

I do think that one sounds wonderful. I need to check that one because I do need to relax and meditate.

But, it could be a good way to ride the train!

Suki, maybe I never noticed because I've always downloaded all my chanting albums...interesting!

I made a CD for a friend who was driving seven hours home from her visit with my wife and me. I included some Krishna Das and a few tracks of singing bowls. My friend said, at one point along the journey, she had to pull over and stop the CD. It was too powerful for the moment.

Melanie--Glad you are home. Can't wait to hear about the retreat. I ordered that CD "Heart as Wide as the world". It should be here in a few days. Can't wait to listen to it. On the way to work??? Maybe not!

Teri (and Mike) you are going to love it. I only listened to it once on the way to Kripalu, but then it became the soundtrack to the entire weekend and the retreat closed with Heart As Wide As the World. Oh course I cried through the entire thing and tried not to blow my nose so loudly that it would distract everyone else...

Please pardon my dropping in, all new and discovering...but yes, some music is not the best idea when driving. Even certain CDs by "Dead Can Dance" have the effect of making the edges of the world a bit too shimmery! Love KD, he is my prozac over the speaker system at need.

Hi Labrys, welcome!
I love Dead Can Dance too. I was thinking again about the warning today and realized that my commute is perhaps very different than other people's commutes. When I drive to work it's one long road on which I might see 5-10 other cars along the 25 mile stretch, until I'm almost at my destination. No traffic lights, pedestrians, gas stations...in other words, not many distractions. So the chanting works. Were I driving in the city having to pay attention to stop signs and crosswalks and buses and snarled traffic...maybe not so much...

My goodness, M! So long since I had that kind of drive, that alone would make my mind dance off into the aether!
