The Length of Winter

Ahhh, winter. You get to me every year. Though I'm not as blue as I sometimes am during these dark February days, I'm definitely beginning to struggle against it, and as I pay my visits to your blogs I see that some of you are too. Remember to keep moving, keep a good stack of books beside you, keep breathing (as Karen reminds me), keep planning those summer gardens, keep a warm mug of something delicious within reach, keep in mind that in only one more month we'll be turning our clocks ahead, relishing the longer days, welcoming back the birds, the peepers, the light.

How are you hanging in there?

I like winter, with its gray skies, the torrents of rain we get here, and watching the drops hang from the bare limbs and branches of the trees. I'll probably like spring, too, when it arrives... and from the buds on the trees, it's coming sooner than later.

Oh no, I am with you. Each day of grey sky and all this snow - keeping me cooped up inside - its driving me nuts!

keep a bowl of clementines nearby - for the color, the aroma, the taste of warmer days

I am feeling a bit better this week since the sun has decided to make an appearance. We are having some really great temps too which helps for being outside. We have been planning garden projects and actually have been doing some physical stuff out there this week. Quite a contrast from the weeks prior. The good news is Melanie, that what we now have is what you will be getting in about a week or so, right? I'm sending the sun your way. Hang on!

Not long to go, I saw some snowdrops here in Scotland recently, sure sign that springs coming.

I'm enjoying the winter. I'd rather shovel snow than mow the lawn. Although gardening is definitely something I'm craving about this time of year. My poor pooch Maggie hasn't seen the back 40 for quite some time now, and she really seems ready to just bust out! The seed catalogs are quite a tease, and also a delight for the eyes. Sometimes the planning of the garden brings more pleasure than actually digging in with the shovel. My imagination of all that could be possible in the garden is greater than the muscle I have to achieve the imagined result.
Hang in there...spring is just around the corner.
Sending some love,
karen

trust in nature: it will change and cycle round. Sometimes hard to maintain this image though when cooped up with windows closed.

i read tons, watch DVD's, do craft projects, and now have reinstituted the daily walk.

I found orienteering helped me in February... to be out in it and not allow myself to stay inside. It cheered me no end. Yes - colour must adorn your world, why not with vitamin-full clementines?

thanks melanie.
your suggestions are right on.
you hang in there too.
sometimes i grow wheat grass around now too (can get the seeds at whole foods). it grows super fast with little soil in any kind of pot (i use a low casserole dish) and is so pretty and feels nice when you brush your hand against it. my bunnies love to mow it down if i decide to share.

I too have trouble with the long dreary days of Winter at times, but know that we need that season as much as the rest. Happy Winter to you.

I do crazy things like chop my hair!

Good luck with yours! (And PS: my hair would NEVER sit that flat, either. It's just wishful thinking!)

Having just returned from a nice warm, sunny vacation in the Caribbean certainly makes winter seem less difficult to tolerate...and I just discovered some daffodil shoots in my yard!..in RI!

I was just thinking today that I was kind of starting to get used to colder temperatures and that winter wasn't so bad. Of course, winter here ain't nothin' compared to Massachusetts!
