Because we all need things to celebrate.Back in mid-November I submitted the image above to the Gardening Gone Wild photo contest, for that month's theme, The End of the Line. And then, with everything that's happened since, I completely forgot that I'd done so. Until today when I was surprised to discover it posted on the site and chosen for an honorable mention with the words, "the poetry of work with zinnias as seen at secret notebooks • wild pages is simply superb."
Unlike the peer-judged photo contest sites I used to submit to on a regular basis, the Gardening Gone Wild contests are judged by professional garden photographers, so I feel quite humbled to have been mentioned (or should I say "honored?"). I remember the day I shot this very clearly, because the dying garden had struck me as so beautiful, clinging bravely to its last bit of color, its end so close and inevitable. How appropriate this sentiment turned out to be for the month of November.
To celebrate, I'm going to give away an 8x10 glossy print of this photo. To enter, just leave a comment on this post between now and Friday (at the stroke of midnight - dong!) and I'll do the old draw-a-name-out-of-a-hat thing to choose a random winner. And then my win can be your win.

Lovely picture. Congratulations! I leave my zinnias in as late as I can, because I can still see their color from the house even when they are almost gone.

Congratulations,m.Yes, I, too, think this a well-deserved mention. And I'm pretty sure I said something similar at the time.
Isn't it funny how things work? The whole title "End of the Line" and it being submitted and accepted for November. How could anyone say that there is not a master plan in this universe! Well-deserved award. I have wanted so many of your photos and would be honored if I ever had one here in my own home.
congratulations on your very well-deserved honor! and there is indeed something so very poignant about that last bit of color hanging on before the inevitable end.
