I was at the gym tonight when an older gentleman I've had many conversations with over the course of the past few months stepped onto the cardio machine adjacent to mine. Though we've spoken quite a bit, we've never formally introduced ourselves — something that's not uncommon around here, but still odd and a little annoying to me. Tired of constantly introducing myself first, I purposely did not this time, and his curiosity must have finally gotten the better of him."By the way," he said, "what's your name?"
When I told him, he admitted that he'd already had a name in mind for me all these months.
"What?" I asked.
"Peter Pan" he smiled, "Like Mary Martin."
I laughed and told him he could keep calling me Peter Pan if he wanted. I'd be disappointed if he didn't.

Peter Pan! What exactly do you wear at the gym? LOL
You handled it much better than I would have. :)
LOL! Thats sweet.
JC, it probably doesn't help that I have 3 or 4 green workout tops and wear black tights. But at least the tights aren't green too, and there's no little hat involved...
I see the resemblance! Since he specified Mary Martin (as opposed to the cartoon), I think he meant it as a compliment re: your youthful energy and spunk!
FWIW: The best Peter Pan movie is the one from 2003, starring Jason Isaacs as handsome Hook!
P.S. I don't know if you changed anything on your page, but it's loading more easily for me now, and I'm grateful :-)
overcome by a serious wave of nostalgia...i loved that mary martin black and white tv version...and in fifth or sixth grade i played peter pan in the school play...i gotta crow...
I love Peter Pan (I teach the play in my children's lit course every semester) and I love Mary Martin as Peter Pan, so I think this is a wonderful and sweet story!
I guess I really need to check out the Mary Martin version. I did see Sandy Duncan as Peter Pan in Providence, waaaay back when.
Peter Pan. That's awesome.
The fictional character I have gotten most often is Betty Boop... yours is better.
It was when I had the pixie cut that I got Betty Boop most often.
